FIXD Alternative

A FIXD alternative should not start with buying a dongle and waiting for it to ship. AI Mechanic starts with the car in your driveway, right now: describe the symptom, upload a photo of the leak or the dash light, or — with a free account — record the noise itself, and get ranked likely causes, an urgency call, and what the repair typically costs. Know what’s wrong. Know what to do.

FIXD is a good, simple code reader, and for reading a check-engine code in plain English it earned its fans. But its owners keep telling the same two stories. The first is the hardware-plus-subscription bill: “without buying a membership of $100 per year it will not tell you anything but a code” (FIXD owner, Trustpilot). The second is the surprise charge: “Just got charged 126.00 and I haven’t even opened the package” (Trustpilot), and “they somehow tricked me into a subscription during the account set up process” before a $156.08 charge landed a year later (Trustpilot). Reviewers who compare these scanners for a living have a shorter name for it — OBDAdvisor calls it the “FIXD subscription trap.”

Coding / live dataNo coding; live data is engine-onlyNo coding and no live ECU stream — see “Where FIXD wins”

Where FIXD wins — honestly

  1. It reads live data straight from your car’s port while you drive, and it can clear a code. AI Mechanic cannot do either — it works from what you describe, photograph, record, or paste in.

  2. If plain-English code reading is all you ever want and you already own the sensor, FIXD’s basic free tier does that simply.

  3. Its Premium mechanic hotline puts a human on the phone. Our answers are AI, with sources and ranges — and the app says plainly that it does not replace a qualified mechanic or a professional inspection.

Where we win

  1. No adapter trap. Every dongle app is only half a product until the hardware is in your port — and locked to that brand’s hardware after. There is nothing to buy, pair, lose, or wait two weeks for.

  2. The useful answers are not the upsell. Cost estimates are the feature FIXD locks behind ~$100/yr; ours are in the free plan, and a shop diagnosis alone averages $125–$183 (RepairPal) — our whole DIY plan is $4.99/mo.

  3. It hears and sees the problem. A code reader is blind to the noise your car makes and the leak on your driveway. Record the sound, send the photo — that is a diagnosis a dongle cannot start.

  4. No surprise-renewal story to tell. Free means no card. Paid web plans state the trial and the price on the pricing page before you start, and cancelling stops renewal — payments already made are final.
